Ein Blick in die (spät-)mittelalterliche Mentalitätsgeschichte soll das Verständnis für die Bereitschaft zum Ablasskauf anbahnen. Der Ablasshandel und Luthers Reaktion darauf wird als zentraler Anlass für das Reformationsgeschehen ebenso näher beleuchtet, wie die Verhandlungen gegen Luther auf dem Reichstag zu Worms. Zentrale Aspekte der lutherischen Lehre werden thematisiert, gleichermaßen die zunehmend schärfere und mit neuen Medien ausgetragene Auseinandersetzung mit der römischen Kirche und ihren Anhängern. Nach Materialien und Aufgaben zur Ausbreitung der Reformation, Luthers Haltung zu den großen Bauernaufständen, der Gegenreformation und den Auswirkungen der Konfessionalisierung bis in die Gegenwart wendet sich der Blick auf die Erinnerungskultur rund um das Refomationsjubiläum 2017.
